The secrets of successful networking

We always advocate that one of the benefits of being a Chamber member is our ability to provide you great networking opportunities.

But what does that mean? Is it just about meeting new people at events?

By definition, networking is more than that. It’s about meeting new people – with intent to do great business.

We had a chat to Sam Williamson, Executive Director at BNI for the Bay of Plenty / Waikato / Gisborne area, to find out more about the secrets to successful networking.

It seems like an obvious question, but why is networking important?

Networking is a valuable skill that is easy to learn and one of the most powerful tools available for increasing one’s personal exposure, creating meaningful relationships and providing growth opportunities at a personal and professional level. Oh and it’s fun!

If someone is going out on their own or are new to town, for example, how can they start networking / where is a good place to begin?

I would recommend that they attend get involved in a local networking organisation e.g. BNI, get involved in the local business community e.g. Chamber of Commerce, and attend industry organisation events (if available).

How do you differentiate between ‘meeting new people’ and ‘networking’?

Meeting new people is just that, meeting people without any further intention whereas networking is about meeting new people, and then actively identifying ways in which to help each other, building trust and creating a long term and mutually beneficial relationship.

For some networking might seem like a dirty word – something that instantly makes them feel uncomfortable. Why do you think it can be a trigger for some people and how can they change their perception?

Networking is really just about taking an interest in others and finding ways to help them and in return people help you. So if viewed from this perspective it is a fun and rewarding activity. If somebody feels intimidated or unsure about networking, this is easily overcome by attending networking course or networking organisation where you can learn to network in a fun, friendly and supportive environment.

What are the top three things that make someone a good networker?

A positive mindset, being willing to help others and using ears, eyes and mouth in proportion.

What are a couple of common mistakes people make when networking?

Common things I see are people being unprepared, close minded, too self-centred, overbearing, intoxicated, using poor manners, direct selling, not following up on promises made, staying within cliques, turning up late / leaving early, using phone as a crutch. Of all of these I would say not following up would be the key mistake, because without follow up you have effectively wasted your time.

What will your workshop cover?

By taking part in the course you will understand the philosophy of networking, know how to prepare for networking, have some tools at hand to use in networking situations and have practised networking.

Sam regularly hosts training sessions on the Secrets of Successful Networking. These are free for new Chamber members and you can access your promo code by emailing us on training@tauranga.org.nz
