Introducing the Western Bay of Plenty Women’s Fund

A Unique Giving Circle:

The Western Bay of Plenty Women’s Fund, Ka mua, ka muri, powered by Acorn Foundation, is a Giving Circle with a difference. Our Kaupapa (purpose) is to bring together our generous and altruistic community who want to give back and make a meaningful difference for women, girls and whānau, locally, and at scale. Members contribute financially to the pool of funds which is invested for giving and perpetuity, they can nominate a deserving cause and vote on the distribution of funds annually.

Community Engagement and Impact:

Our bi-annual events, quarterly newsletters and social updates will keep members informed on progress of the fund and the impact their contributions have on recipients. We are excited to launch this to the Western Bay of Plenty and welcome all members. Collectively, we can make a difference and help address the diverse needs of our community for years to come.

Hayley Nelson, chair of the foundation committee commented “In giving, we receive. Bringing together our generous community to give back to local wāhine and whānau, with our time, kindness and resources is such a privilege to be a part of. Ka Mua ka muri refers to the interconnectedness of past, present and future, where the past informs and influences the future and with this fund, that’s exactly what we are aiming to achieve. Taking action now, to have a positive ripple effect for the future.”

Sustainable Philanthropy and Future Outlook:

So what is a “giving circle” It’s accessible philanthropy that is sociable and impactful. We can do so much more together. This is a tried and tested concept that Community Foundations in other regions of NZ have successfully implemented. The Acorn Foundation is an established Community Foundation with over 20 years’ local funding experience and more than $63M in funds under management. As such, Acorn is well placed to manage the fund’s operations.

There is a suggested donation of $50/month, but everyone who donates to the BOP Women’s Fund becomes a member of the fund, no matter how much you donate. Members are invited to exclusive events and get to help us decide which projects to fund and how best to make a difference.

50% of your donation will be paid annually to chosen charity recipients, for immediate impact. The remaining 50% of your donation will be invested into an endowment fund, with a portion of the income generated granted back into the region each year. This will create a perpetual, self-sustaining fund that will provide long-term security for future generations in the BOP.

While the launch is oversubscribed, by registering for the event, you will be put on the database and kept in the loop for all future events, and initiatives.
