Hospice Awareness Week (12–18 May) is a time to reflect on the vital role hospice services play in our community. For Waipuna Hospice, it’s also a time to raise awareness of a growing challenge: ensuring these services remain accessible and free for everyone who needs them.
Waipuna Hospice provides specialist palliative care and wraparound support to people living with a terminal illness, along with their whānau. Their focus goes beyond end-of-life care – it’s about helping people live every moment with dignity, comfort, and connection.
From medical care and counselling to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, bereavement support, and practical assistance, Waipuna Hospice’s services reach deep into our community. Most patients are cared for at home, where they feel safest. Right now, the team is supporting 243 people in their own homes, and expects to care for nearly 900 patients this year – plus their loved ones.
But delivering this level of care requires significant funding. While Waipuna Hospice receives government support, it only covers 44% of their total costs. That leaves a funding shortfall of $8.1 million that must be met through community donations, fundraising, and business partnerships.
Why Local Businesses Matter
In times like these, local businesses can make a big difference. As the backbone of our region, the business community has an opportunity to help protect a service that touches so many lives.
Here are a few ways you can get involved:
- Make a donation: Every contribution helps close the funding gap and keeps care free for those who need it. Donate here.
- Raise awareness: Share the Waipuna Hospice message with your staff, customers, and networks.
- Partner with purpose: Become a business supporter, sponsor, or volunteer. Whether it’s offering services, time, or financial backing, every form of support counts. Reach out to Waipuna Hospice directly to explore partnership opportunities.
A Community Effort
Hospice care is a vital part of our health system, one that many of us will rely on at some point in our lives, either for ourselves or someone we love. Keeping this care accessible requires all of us to play a part.
During Hospice Awareness Week, and throughout the year, we encourage you to stand with Waipuna Hospice in protecting this essential community service.
