Vertical Horizonz/Poutū Huapae Health, Safety and Training Advisor Keith Barnett will be judging businesses entered into the Workplace Safety category of the Business Awards.
Keith provides guidance on matters relating to our general health, our safety systems and our training processes and procedures. Keith is the health and safety point of contact for VHNZ staff and stakeholders. He works closely with our quality assurance team to deliver training solutions focused on providing stakeholders with the correct skills to perform individual and collective tasks. Where required, he also delivers internal and client-based training.
Keith’s background includes serving 24 years with the British Military. Keith’s experience includes training needs analysis, course design and delivery, advanced and defensive driving techniques, and the management of health and safety in a logistics environment. Keith saw active service on a number of occasions and has a very good understanding of teams working under high pressure in high hazard and high stress environments.
After retiring from military service Keith spent 6 years working in the logistics industry, focusing on the conduct of training needs analysis, the preparation and delivery of training programmes across a variety of military and civilian transport fleet operations. Keith also spent 4 years managing a mobile elevating work platform training company. He immigrated to New Zealand in 2009.
During his time in New Zealand, Keith has been heavily involved in the delivery of industrial health and safety training, with a particular emphasis on permit to work, work at height, including mobile elevating work platforms, and work in confined spaces, across a number of industries including construction, manufacturing, food processing, water, and transport, for a variety of different principles, including Fonterra, Fletchers, Genesis and Fulton Hogan.
Areas of expertise include
- The training and assessment of trainees to meet New Zealand and International standards and industry best practice.
- The training and assessment of workers in notifiable work, at height and in confined spaces, specifically to meet the needs of the client and associated standards required by WorkSafe New Zealand.
- The training and assessment of workers to analyse and manage risk in high risk work activities and/or workplaces.
- The development of training solutions to meet exacting customer requirements.
Keith has a passion for managing risk to mitigate harm, so that people involved in high-risk work activities can make good, informed decisions about how they choose to work. He has a desire to improve the knowledge and skill levels within people to empower them to take control of their own safety. Keith is a motivated trainer who prides himself on delivering top quality training, and, like other members of Vertical Horizonz, is focused on improving industry skills, productivity and safety.
Having spent time living in Hamilton, Albany and Hatfields Beach, Keith now resides in Papamoa Beach in the beautiful Bay of Plenty.
