Matt Chat: How to recruit more applicants to job vacancies in 2021

It is a buyer’s market throughout New Zealand where skilled and experienced people have plenty of job options.

Many businesses want to grow by employing more people, but they are struggling to find suitable applicants.

In some cases, whole industries need to work together to demonstrate their career opportunities. In other cases, some individual businesses need to reflect on their reputation for employing staff.

How are you welcoming the right staff into your organisation? Can you demonstrate how you live your values? How are you developing and building your workforce? Are your employees telling their friends and family how great their work is?

Many business owners are struggling to find any eligible applicants on their own. Sometimes it is useful to use a recruitment agency if you need an urgent recruitment or you seek a specifically skilled person.

I spoke with Ingrid Hennessey from Personnel Resources, who shared some current recruiting trends and outlined some tips for struggling business owners.

Ingrid’s top tip was to ensure you are responsive and you don’t leave applicants hanging. Make sure you follow a robust recruitment process, but when you find a great applicant, it needs to be your top priority to reach a decision and get them an offer!
